A little about us:

We are a Whitby family, who have been serving Fish and Chips in Whitby since 1968. We are passionate about all things Whitby and equally passionate about excellent fish and chips.

Our family business was started by Violet and Dennis Fusco in 1968 at our sister restaurant, Royal Fisheries on Baxtergate, Whitby.

The business was taken from strength to strength by their son, Peter and his wife, Carol, who went on to purchase Quayside in 1999.

Peter and Carol’s four children; Stuart, Adrian, Raymond and Maria all work within the business today. We were delighted to win the coveted ‘Fish and Chip Shop of the Year’ in 2014.

Whitby’s Fish and Chip History

Whitby has a rich history as a fishing and sea-faring port; fishing emerged in the middle ages with the herring and whaling fleets and Captain James Cook, one of the most notable explorers of his time, trained at a Whitby shipping firm in 1746 and afterwards charted New Zealand and the Great Barrier Reef of Australia on Whitby built ship, HMB Endeavour.

There is some research to suggest a connection between Whitby and fish and chips and the Anglo-Saxon era (410 – 1066), through the Penny Hedge tradition. Such traditions, Whitby’s long standing affiliation to fishing, seafaring and ship-building and the fact that Whitby is still an active port and seaside town mean that Whitby remains popular for fish and chips as well as experiencing such tradition and heritage in one place.

Our Environment

We only use biodegradable, often compostable, food packaging in our take-away and look for innovative, new ways to reduce the amount of plastic used. We have been encouraging our suppliers to do the same.

We have also made a pledge to the Marine Conservation Society to source fish and seafood sustainably and formally commit to reducing our use of single use plastic throughout the business.

Our social pages are filled with lovely views and local activity suggestions.

We provide a webcam on this site so everyone can enjoy uninterrupted views of the harbour, piers and bridge and we have always endeavoured to support local causes where possible, many a float was completed for past Whitby Regattas!

Teaching Freddie Flintoff to fry in the 2014 Whitby Regatta as part of his television programme, ‘Lord of the Fries’ was definitely a regatta highlight for us.
